German investigators suspect Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, organized a Sept. 3 arson attack near two defense companies in Munich, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing security sources. The case adds to concerns about suspected Russian sabotage targeting Europe’s defense industry.

The attack took place near the headquarters of Rohde & Schwarz and Helsing. Investigators believe two Bulgarian suspects detained shortly afterward may have been recruited as low-level operatives by a GRU-linked network operating from Slovakia, according to the newspaper’s reporting, summarized by The New Voice of Ukraine.

Police said incendiary devices were thrown at a construction site at the Rohde & Schwarz headquarters. A 28-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man were arrested at a nearby gas station. The fire caused no significant damage, and no one was injured, Reuters reported.

The Munich Public Prosecutor General’s Office declined to confirm the reported Russian connection, citing the ongoing investigation. The suspected GRU role remains an investigative assessment.

Investigators are also examining possible links to the attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August. Germany formally blamed Russia for that operation on Sept. 1. An explosives-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian aircraft on Aug. 4 and defused. Moscow denied responsibility.

Leipzig/Halle is a major freight hub that supports Ukraine and NATO logistics. The airport case and the suspected intelligence link in Munich have sharpened concerns about the security of facilities involved in European defense and military support for Kyiv.
