A U.S. Air Force service member has died after falling from the rafters of the Alamodome during a pregame military rappelling demonstration in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, October 17. Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs confirmed the death on Sunday, identifying the individual as a member of the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. The service member died after being transported to a local hospital.

The incident occurred shortly before the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) faced Navy during its annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans football game. Four military personnel were participating in a rappelling demonstration from the stadium’s ceiling when one appeared to lose control during the descent and fell onto the field. Emergency personnel immediately responded as spectators witnessed the accident.

The San Antonio Fire Department initially confirmed that the service member had been transported to a hospital as a Priority 1 patient, indicating life-threatening injuries. Medical personnel and stadium staff provided immediate assistance before the individual was transported for further treatment. The incident delayed the scheduled football game by approximately 10 minutes.

On October 18, Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs confirmed that the service member had died from injuries sustained in the fall. The individual’s identity has not been publicly released. Military officials said the incident remains under investigation and that additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

Military Unit and Investigation

The service member was assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron, which operates at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis. The unit provides training for Tactical Air Control Party personnel, who coordinate air support and work alongside U.S. Army and Marine Corps formations. Its training includes specialized tactical operations and rappelling exercises.

Authorities have not established what caused the service member’s uncontrolled descent or whether equipment failure or other factors contributed to the accident. UTSA expressed condolences to the individual’s family and military colleagues and made support resources available to its community. The Air Force has not announced a timeline for completing its investigation.
