Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber, 40, was killed early Saturday after a gunman opened fire on two officers responding to an emergency call in West Philadelphia. Seiber, a 10-year veteran assigned to the city's 19th Police District, was struck three times and later died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. A second officer was critically wounded but survived the attack.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly before 1 a.m. Officers had been dispatched to investigate reports of an armed man standing on the porch of a residential property. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the officers encountered heavy gunfire shortly after approaching the residence.

Seiber and his colleague were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where both underwent emergency surgery. Seiber's wife and other family members were able to reach the hospital before his death. He leaves behind a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

Second Officer Survives Multiple Gunshot Wounds

The second officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was struck 12 times during the attack and required extensive emergency treatment. Police initially described his condition as critical before confirming Saturday that he had stabilized. His identity has not been publicly released.

Following the initial shooting, the suspect fled through a nearby alleyway and continued firing at responding officers. Additional police units converged on the neighborhood as authorities established a perimeter and began searching the surrounding residential streets. No additional officers were struck during the subsequent gunfire.

The search ended when officers located the suspect in a tree near the shooting scene and took him into custody. Investigators recovered two handguns and a shotgun, including a firearm believed to have been taken from one of the wounded officers. Authorities have not established a public motive for the attack.

Investigation Continues

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators reconstruct the sequence of events and examine the firearms recovered from the property. Criminal charges were pending following the arrest, and authorities have not announced whether additional individuals are being investigated in connection with the shooting.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro have expressed condolences following Seiber's death. Shapiro ordered flags across the commonwealth lowered to half-staff in the fallen officer's honor. The Philadelphia Police Department is continuing its investigation as Seiber's family and colleagues mourn his death.
