One of two men sought in connection with the assault of a Danish tourist in Venice has turned himself in to police and is now in custody, marking a significant development in the investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department had been searching for two men suspected of assaulting the Danish national, who was visiting the United States when he was attacked near the intersection of Speedway and Washington Boulevard.
The assault occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. on October 30. The victim was found unconscious with a laceration to the right side of his head. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for serious injuries.
Surveillance footage released by LAPD captured the confrontation. The footage shows one suspect approaching the victim, striking him and knocking an object from his hand. When the victim attempts to retrieve it, the suspect appears to prevent him from doing so. The footage later shows the same individual appearing to remove an object from the victim's pocket before a second man approaches and punches the victim in the face, knocking him unconscious.
LAPD's Pacific Division initially released images of both men and sought the public's assistance in identifying them. Investigators classified the incident as a felony battery investigation.
The subsequent surrender places one of the two individuals sought in connection with the assault in police custody. Further details regarding the man's identity, specific booking information and the status of the second individual had not been established in the available reporting.
The investigation remains ongoing.
